"An indispensable example of the inquisitive, self-questioning democratic spirit." - A.O. Scott, The New York Times
"Important and moving. Should be essential viewing." - Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal
Jehane Noujaim's timely documentary explores the nature of truth and ethics in the popular media, with particular focus on the primary satellite news network to the Arab world, Al-Jazeera. Through interviews with journalists and producers involved with Al-Jazeera's reporting on the war in Iraq, the film provides a balanced look at how their news is gathered and presented in comparison to the Western world's news outlets.
Control Room re-examines a pressing question of international relations today: "is America radicalizing or stabilizing the Arab world?" Without miring itself in conspiracy theories, the film provides a balanced view of Al Jazeera's presentation of the second Iraq war to their worldwide Arab audience, and in doing so calls into question many of the prevailing images and positions offered up by the U.S. news media. Control Room's view inside Al Jazeera - branded "Osama Bin-Laden's mouthpiece" suggests that its views on reportage might actually be more in tune with democratic ideals than those of its Western counterparts.
