"An engrossing story of a foolish peasant patriarch ... Westernization, war with Israel and the plunging price of tomatoes take their toll as he watches his children go their own way." —John Hartl, Seattle Times
Set in a small Syrian village, The Nights of the Jackal chronicles the effects of Westernization and war on traditional family life.
Abu Kamel is the head of a peasant family and the absolute ruler of his little kingdom. His only fear is the pack of jackals that haunts the village at night, keeping him awake with their howling. Whistling keeps the jackals at bay, but Abu's wife is the only one in the family who can produce the high-pitched sound.
As the jackals continue to draw closer each night, Abu Kamel's dominion over his household slowly begins to crack and crumble.
